Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #251

Astro City #1 — Writer: Kurt Busiek;  Art: Brent Anderson A new Astro City is always cause for celebration: Busiek and Anderson (plus Alex Ross on the covers) have been telling tales of this book’s title town for almost 20 years, and they’re always clever, human explorations of the superhero genre, packed with interesting characters and situations. Busiek’s been sick for the last few years, and unable to work on a comic as labor-intensive as this one — so the fact that this is a new ongoing series is good news, both for him and for us: check out the … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #75 by Dan!

Hi folks! the internet is down at my house, so I’m hanging with my parents while I do this. Yee-haw! Let’s do this! New Avengers #6 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Steve Epting Aside from Deadpool, which I don’t count cause it’s a comedy, sometimes I feel like New Avengers is the ony Marvel Now book really worth reading. It’s a completely fresh take on traditional Marvel characters, it’s introduced some new players, and it’s got a high concept that’s bound to have a payoff at some point. With this issue, the cover doesn’t lie, as a planet blows up, things … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #69 by Dan!

Down to the wire this week folks! No excuses, just remember to do your taxes. Let’s do this! Age of Ultron #1 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Bryan Hitch Well, this “big new event” sure starts off as a very pretty piece of mediocrity. The only person who has seen any advantage from Marvel’s recent “Ship-it-faster-than-we-can-write-it” strategy is Bendis, because his slow pace works better when read in chunks. This will (hopefully) be the case with Age of Ultron, because I have no idea what’s going on in this first issue. We’re given an alternate timeline called “Now” where Ultron … Continue reading

Another week, another set of reviews where I use the same adjective repeatedly. Let’s do this! The Black Beetle #1 Writer/Artist: Francesco Francavilla So yeah, I knew this was going to be incredibly sweet based purely on the fact that it was Francavilla doing what he wants. His art style is almost like a noir-cartoon and it’s some of the best that you’re going to find on the comic book stands. So far, in the two issues that have come out of this series, Francavilla has also shown that he can put together a coherent mystery that leaves the reader … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #65 by Dan!

All right folks, we’re back in action, so here’s this week’s reviews. Let’s do this! Batman Incorporated #6 Writer: Grant Morrison Artist: Chris Burnham Things are getting really really bad for the members of Incorporated. It doesn’t matter which character, we’re hitting the very end of the rising action and ramping toward the climax of Morrison’s tremendous run on this series. Every single character is just about at rock bottom and I couldn’t possibly love this title any more than I do. It’s incredibly well put-together, and Burnham is one of the few artists that can keep up with everything … Continue reading
