Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #256

There are a lot of good non-corporate, creator-owned books out right now (this has been a great year for them), so let’s start with those this week: Saga #13 — Writer: Brian K. Vaughan;  Art: Fiona Staples This is revving up again after a few months’ absence (the creative team takes a break after each six-issue volume), and the cover helps to show why Staples, the artist, has been such a big part of its becoming a hit: the eyes are drawn to the cute baby first, and the lifelike eyes, but then they notice the horns… and the fact … Continue reading

Walking Dead #100 — Writer: Robert Kirkman;  Art: Charlie Adlard This is now officially the best-selling comic of the year, a tribute to both Kirkman’s storytelling skills and luck in catching the cultural zombie zeitgeist at just the right moment, and with just the right media tie-ins and collaborators. Eddie thought it  was lazy — it provides just the kind of major-character death that you’d expect, and on top of that it’s got a lot of echoes from the earlier “Governor” storyline. Gillen handled a few Thor stories last year, and did a good job, and here delivers a young-Loki tale that’s layered, lyrical and actually makes you like the complicated little trickster; it’s a sign that, with a crossover mini-series and a movie all throwing a big spotlight on the … Continue reading

Stuff That Was Awesome #1 By Dan!

And here’s the good stuff!  Feel free to leave comments about how much you love my taste! Hellblazer #268 Writer: Peter Milligan Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli Milligan’s run on Hellblazer is literally getting better by the issue.  He’s digging deeper into the psyche of a broken John Constantine, and that’s creating some of the best Vertigo madness in a long time.  Add in Shade the Changing Man (Which post-Ditko became Milligan’s baby) and this is the perfect book for the fans of the weird.  Add in a mutilated and removed thumb, and you’ve got yourself a book of the week. DC … Continue reading
