Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #283

Week three of DC’s moving-cover extravaganza brings ten more comics; this week, you don’t even have to click on the covers to see them move (assuming I embedded them correctly…)! Justice League #1 — Writer: Jeff Lemire;  Art: Jed Dougherty This is the conclusion to a two-parter started over in Justice League United last week, wherein a super-villain prison on Mars (wardened by the Martian Manhunter)  has a breakout, courtesy of a very powerful and crazy Captain Atom, and the Futures End version of the Justice League (plus a couple of members of the Legion of Super-Heroes) have to fight … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #274

Another week with tons of first issues — there are eleven reviewed here, and that wasn’t even all of them — but first let’s start with a book that’s more a last issue than a first: Life With Archie #36 — Writer: Paul Kupperberg;  Pencils: Pat and Tim Kennedy;  Inks: Jim Amash This is the comic where Archie “dies.” Now, as readers of this website, you’ll no doubt find it easier than civilians to grasp that Life With Archie is set in the future, and has been exploring what happens to the Riverdale gang after high school (in one timeline, Archie … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #99 by Dan!

So here we are. If some of you haven’t heard, I’m leaving the comic book store for greener “full-time job” pastures (not really that much greener if you ask me. My last day is this Saturday, June 7th, so stop on by to tell me how much you’ve disliked all my reviews all these years!) Barring some aggressive boredom changing my mind, this will be the last edition of the Latest and (Mostly) Greatest. It’s been an interesting process getting used to writing about comics every other week, and I hope that some of you at least slightly enjoyed it. … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #84 by Dan!

And we’re back! Just one more week left of 3-D covers, and I’ll be here to cover them all. But first, let’s hit all the important other stuff of the week. Let’s do this! Zero #1 Writer: Ales Kot Artist: Michael Walsh This is such a good comic, even Eddie read it and enjoyed it (cue audience gasp)! A special op agent is out in the field looking to collect some data while two super-soldiers fight to the death around him. This issue acts as the pilot to the series, and it is pretty darn fantastic. The art style is … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #34 by Dan!

All right folks, here comes the last round of #2’s hitting the market. The Professor is claiming that he “doesn’t mean” to write 2,000 words about every one of these, but we all know he’s just screwing with me. On to the books! Incredible Hulk #1 Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Marc Silvestri: I’m not a Hulk fan, I’m not a Silvestri fan, and Aaron is hit-or-miss. Here? It’s a miss. There’s nothing to draw me in, nothing fun and it’s not an issue I thought was worth anything at all. Wolverine and the X-men #1 Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Chris … Continue reading
