Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #215

Dark Horse Presents #8 — Creators: Various Actually, the list of creators for this book pretty much is the review: for $8, you get ten eight-page stories, including a new Beasts of Burden with the usual lush, expressive art by Jill Thompson, and a script from Evan Dorkin that’s a perfect blend of gentle humor and, at the end, stark horror (who knew that sheep could provide both?). Other stories include a new B.P.R.D. dealing with the aftermath over the death of Hellboy, chapters of Neal Adams’ and Howard Chaykin’s ongoing serials, the first installment of The Massive, Brian Wood’s … Continue reading
Fresh Eyes on Old Books #37 by Dan!

Oh the things I do for you people!… I just spent three hours editing for one of my classes and I still am giving you what you so desperately crave… more reviews! Let’s see if I can keep this in English for an entire article! Action #278 from 1961 Alan’s eyes lit up yesterday when he saw I was reading this comic, and he basically went on to spoil the entire story for me. Perry White gains super powers (and loses a pot belly) by eating some mysterious plant found in his backyard (as we all have done at some … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #35 by Dan!

And we’re back! I have a splitting headache, but that won’t stop me. Let’s do this! Silver Surfer #7 from 1969 I’m not gunna lie, these Silver Surfer comics were worth their 25-cent price point. This book is thick. This story is, in a nutshell, weird. Silver Surfer meets an heir to Dr. Frankenstein who is, of course, trying to bring his own monster to life. The Dr. accidentally creates a new Silver Surfer that tortures the town, and it’s up to the normal Surfer to bring him down. John Buscema provides the art, and the only way I can … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #35 by Dan

Oh no! Bet you didn’t expect me back so soon. Outside circumstances are giving you a double dose of Dan two weeks in a row, so let’s do this! Uncanny X-men #1 Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Carlos Pacheco: This is what you should be doing with the X book. It’s not some wacky-art tour like Wolverine was, it’s a fair intro to the characters that has a big ol’ bad guy to fight. Very good stuff. Shame Itself #1: Writer/Artist: Various: There’s a lot to like about this comedy anthology one-shot. It’s fun stuff that’s very self-criticizing. It’s got a … Continue reading
