Love and Rockets #1 — Creators: Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez One of the few rules around these parts is that Jaime and Gilbert, when they’re a team, automatically go to the top of whatever list they’re on, and the return of this series as a magazine-size, black-and-white periodical is a welcome callback to their ’80s origins. About their third year in, around 1985/1986, when Love and Rockets was on the same lists as Dark Knight Returns, Watchman, Maus and… American Flagg? Anybody else?… as the future of comics, they were just cranking out duel masterpieces every month: Jaime with Maggie … Continue reading

Doctor Strange Annual #1 — Writer: Kathryn Immonen;  Art: Leonardo Romero;  Colors: Jordie Bellaire Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #11 — Writers: Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare;  Art: Natacha Bustos;  Colors: Tamra Bonvillain Lots and lots of comics this week — almost thirty, and I pruned at least a half-dozen more — so let’s jump in, starting with the two Marvel books that aren’t Civil War II related. Justice League: Rebirth #1 — Writer/Penciler: Brian Hitch;  Inks: Daniel Henriques with Scott Hanna;  Colors: Alex Sinclair The Flintstones #1 — Writer: Mark Russell;  Art: Steve Pugh;  Colors: Chris Chuckry Loads of second issues from DC this week, but only a few first ones: Justice League: Rebirth is basically “New Superman joins the Justice League while they’re fighting a super-big threat”; it does its job of introducing the current versions of all the heroes, and of course Hitch makes them look like a twelve-year-old comics fan’s dream, although you have to squint a little to ignore the thin plot (it’s … Continue reading
