Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #278
There weren’t quite as many good comics this week as in the last few months — summer is definitely starting to wind down — but still more than enough to make a decent reading pile. Let’s look… Captain Marvel #6 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick; Art: David Lopez This is the end of the book’s first arc, and it’s been a smart, stylish space story, with Carol helping the population of an oppressed planet against a seemingly-overwhelming military force (this issue’s scenes of an unarmed people protesting against heavily-armored authority figures echoes, quite by chance, recent events out of Missouri), … Continue reading

The Wicked and the Divine #1 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie Iron Man #28 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Pencils: Joe Bennett, Cliff Richards and Derlis Santacruz; Inks: Scott Hanna and Rick Magyar Gillen’s one of the better writers in comics right now, and his first big splash was Phonogram — especially the second volume, a multiple-perspective tale of one night in a dance hall, and the magical effects of the music played there on its listeners. That was a collaboration with McKelvie, too, and the team went on to create one of last year’s best mainstream series, Young Avengers; … Continue reading

All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1 — Creators: Various This is a series of eight-page stories involving five new Marvel launches — Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel, The Invaders, Black Widow and Avengers World — meant to showcase those books’ creative teams and tempt readers into buying the comics; the stories are all woven together with a quest by Loki, who’s also headlining a new title: Loki, Agent of Asgard. Points here for making each episode a brand-new story, and not just a reprint of pages from the various first issues — but points off for charging readers $6 for the … Continue reading

Young Avengers #12 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Pencils: Jamie McKelvie; Inks: McKelvie, Stephen Thompson and Mike Norton The sad news is that this incarnation of Young Avengers is ending in January, with issue #15; the good news is that Gillen and McKelvie are walking away on their own terms, having completed one overall “season,” and it’s been great: funny, wise, exciting, sometimes experimental, and always fun, both to read and to look at (McKelvie’s characters have become so sharply-drawn, so laser-focused and clear, that they leap right off the page). This issue is the next-to-last of the mega-storyline, so it’s … Continue reading
