Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #184
Ultimate Spider-Man #150 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis; Art: Various, including David Lafuente, Sara Pichelli, Joelle Jones, Jamie McKelvie and Scottie Young … and that’s just the major artists; the backup story has a couple of pages each from, among others, Alex Maleev, Dan Brereton, John Romita Senior, Frank Cho, Jim Mahfood, Craig Thompson (!), James Kolchalka (!!), and another dozen or more people. That adds up to 96 pages of story and art, so the $6 cover price isn’t that bad — and, as a celebration of the best mainstream superhero comic of the ’00s (yep, the first issue … Continue reading

Strange Tales II #2 (of 3) — Writers/Artists: Various … And by “various” I mean a six-page Gilbert Hernandez Iron Man and Toro vs. the Leader story, followed by a six-page Jaime Hernandez everybody-at-the-beach story (look at that cover!), plus offerings from Jeffrey Brown, Farel Dalrymple, Paul Hornschemeier, and Tony Millionaire, among others. Nine stories total (ten, if you count the one-page Watcher intro on the inside front cover), from some of the weirdest and wildest alternative creators out there, with creator biographies so you can follow up on the stuff you like. Not all of it works (Sheldon Vella’s “Look … Continue reading

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #5 (of 6) — Writer: Grant Morrison; Art: Ryan Sook and Mick Gray; Pere Perez Um… yeah, so a bunch of DC books out this week are one-shots set after the return of Bruce Wayne, but here we have a very late issue #5 of 6 of said “return,” and he ain’t quite back yet (if it wasn’t obvious from the beginning, now I guess we know how it’s all gonna turn out, eh?). The fact that the second half of the book is by a different art team than the first hints at … Continue reading

Casanova #3 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: Gabriel Ba Even though this is still reprinting previous issues, very few of you saw the originals, so it’s worth getting into now (especially with new stories promised after the repeats finish). Fraction’s in Michael Moorcock/Jerry Cornelius mode here, with time travel, flashy narrative techniques, suave spy stuff and hallucinogenic head games, and Ba’s one of the few artists able to keep up with him and make it all sing. Great stuff, and made even better by Fraction’s essays in each issue — this one, especially, where he gets very personal, practically pays … Continue reading

Hellboy: The Storm #2 (of 3) — Writer: Mike Mignola; Art: Duncan Fegredo Hellboy continues to punch his way to a big climax, as this mini, and the one to follow, complete an over-three-year story that began with Darkness Calls. Each issue works alone, though; you don’t have to know everything that’s going on to appreciate Fegredo’s moody, mystic and action-filled art, or to smile at Mignola’s laconic, stubbornly-regular-guy demon (at the end, he looks out a window to see that he’s surrounded by an army of undead, rotting English knights, and mutters, simply, “Crap.” Couldn’t have said it better … Continue reading
