The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #27

This was a pretty good week folks, full of hits and misses all over the place. So let us reel some of these out and judge them accordingly! Ultimate Fallout: Spider-Man No More #1 (of 6) Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mark Bagley Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Leinil Yu/Stephen Segovia The Ultimate Universe has its fair share of problems, but every once in a while Bendis can write a sick comic, and that’s the case here. Everyone has their own character moment of reacting to the new Spider-Man; things get shaken up and “nothing will … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #25

After I wrote this — but before I posted it — we got the news that Gene Colan died on Thursday, at the age of 84. His comics career spanned almost 70 years, and he was certainly well-established at Marvel when the ten-year-old me, 45 years ago, was awestruck at his work on Daredevil and the Iron Man stories in Tales of Suspense. Add in his Dr. Strange work, his Captain America, his work on two of the best comics of the ’70s — Tomb of Dracula and Howard the Duck — his ’80s work on Batman and indie books, … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #21

Let the records show, I finished this early.  It’s going to be a very busy weekend, but I can’t fail you humble readers! Let’s do this! My Top Five (The Five Best Comics of the Week) Dark Horse Presents #1 writers/artists: Various So yeah, this was really, really rad.  It starts with a pretty good Concrete story, “heads” to a strange Howard Chaykin story, and “leads” to a weird Neal Adams story.  And that’s just the first 25 pages.  AND THERE ARE 80 TOTAL.  The Adams story is, of course, weird cuz’ he’s written it (oy vey.)  There were also … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #19 by Dan!

It’s now a Sunday!  So you know what that means… More old stuff! Let’s do this! Green Lantern #47 from 1966 So this is an absolutely classic Gil Kane comic, and it’s absolutely amazing to look at.  The story is completely doofy, but what do you expect form the 60s?  Hal Jordan has to fight a red alien creature that is spreading diseases across the universe, including an alien that uses 100% of it’s brain (editors note reminds us that we don’t use all of ours).  With all the problems of the “red disease” that this issue has, I start … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #19

Oh man, I’m getting way more efficient with this whole thing; look at how early these are done! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Batman Inc #4 Writer: Grant Morrison Artist: Chris Burnham You ever get tired of  me worshiping this title?  Well get over it.  I’m not a huge fan of Paquette, the artist for the first three issues, but I love me some Chris Burnham.  Take Frank Quitely. Mix him with Geof Darrow, and you get yourself some Burnham.  It’s so freakin’ pretty to look at.  Because we’re only four issues into Morrison’s “grand … Continue reading
