The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #78 by Dan!

Surprise attack! I’m back! That’s right, after last week’s insanity of goodness, I’m back for more! Let’s do this! Satellite Sam #1 Writer: Matt Fraction Artist: Howard Chaykin So. Fraction clearly wrote this book specifically to get Chaykin to draw it right? You’ve got the old-timey 50s style mixed with pin-ups and sci-fi that isn’t quite sci-fi. It might as well be called “Matt Fraction Presents: Something I Wanted Howard Chaykin to Draw.” This beginning overall is a pretty sweet comic. Satellite Sam is a live sci-fi TV show in New York, but the star is conspicuously absent, so his … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #77 by Dan!

All right folks, I’ve been complaining lately about the weeks that I’ve been doing reviews, but this is NOT one of those weeks. This week was a monster with lots to talk about. Let’s do this! Batman/Superman #1 Writer: Greg Pak Artists: Jae Lee & Ben Oliver I never have hope for weird team-ups like this, but I gave it a shot cause Pak often delivers. And boy does this comic deliver! While Lee’s style has changed a lot over the years, it fits almost perfectly with what’s going on here. The overall story is that some thing is possessing … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #252

Sergio Aragones Funnies #8 — Creator: See if you can figure it out…. Aragones had back problems and needed surgery a couple of months ago, so it’s been a while since an issue of this comic came out. This new one is a treat — there’s the usual mix of finely-detailed, just-perfect drawings: a one-page intro talking about the hospital stay, a couple of one-page gags, a couple of intricate puzzle pages, an eight-page western (people forget that Aragones created and wrote DC’s Bat Lash, and knows his way around the history of the Old West; this tale starts out about … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #251

Astro City #1 — Writer: Kurt Busiek;  Art: Brent Anderson A new Astro City is always cause for celebration: Busiek and Anderson (plus Alex Ross on the covers) have been telling tales of this book’s title town for almost 20 years, and they’re always clever, human explorations of the superhero genre, packed with interesting characters and situations. Busiek’s been sick for the last few years, and unable to work on a comic as labor-intensive as this one — so the fact that this is a new ongoing series is good news, both for him and for us: check out the … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #249

Avengers #11 — Writer: Jonathan Hickman;  Art: Mike Deodato Secret Avengers #4 — Writer: Nick Spencer;  Art: Luke Ross Uncanny Avengers #8 — Writer: Rick Remender;  Art: Daniel Acuna Avengers Assemble #15 AU — Writer: Al Ewing;  Pencils: Butch Guice;  Inks: Tom Palmer with Rick Magyar Lots of Avengers comics this week (plus Avengers Arena, although only the title of that mini-series really connects it to the franchise), and they’re a mixed bag. Hickman’s Avengers is the best; wisely, this is a special-ops, done-in-one story, so it doesn’t add to the title’s increasingly-complex backstory: it’s got Shang-Chi, Spider-Woman, Black Widow, … Continue reading
