Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #275
Life With Archie #37 — Writer: Paul Kupperberg; Pencils: Fernando Ruiz, Pat & Tim Kennedy; Inks: Bob Smith, Gary Martin Afterlife With Archie #6 — Writer: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa; Art: Francesco Francavilla If you’d told comics fans a year ago that, in the future, for two weeks in a row, the top books would be… Archie comics, they’d have laughed you out of your local comics shop — and yet here we are: after last week’s “Death of…,” the company follows up this week with two worthy efforts. The first, Life of Archie #37, is the coda to the character’s “death”: Riverdale a year later, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #274
Another week with tons of first issues — there are eleven reviewed here, and that wasn’t even all of them — but first let’s start with a book that’s more a last issue than a first: Life With Archie #36 — Writer: Paul Kupperberg; Pencils: Pat and Tim Kennedy; Inks: Jim Amash This is the comic where Archie “dies.” Now, as readers of this website, you’ll no doubt find it easier than civilians to grasp that Life With Archie is set in the future, and has been exploring what happens to the Riverdale gang after high school (in one timeline, Archie … Continue reading

There are … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #272
Rocket Raccoon #1 — Writer/Artist: Skottie Young Legendary Star-Lord #1 — Writer: Sam Humphries; Pencils: Paco Medina; Inks: Juan Vlasco Marvel’s milking their Guardians of the Galaxy franchise hard, with two new ongoing series starring individual members out this week, but they’re doing a good job of it — both books are worth a look. Rocket Raccoon is the best of the two, because Young’s art is such a wonder: fans know him from his “little kid” alternate covers to a bunch of Marvel titles over the last few years, and from his work on the various Oz books, and … Continue reading
