Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #1 — Writer: Kate Leth;  Art: Brittney L. Williams;  Colors: Megan Wilson Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #2 — Writers: Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder;  Art: Natacha Bustos;  Colors: Tamra Bonvillain Spider-Woman #2 — Writer: Dennis Hopeless;  Pencils/Colors: Javier Rodriguez;  Inks: Alvaro Lopez We were talking about comics friendly to girls and women last week, and these first three Marvel offerings qualify, too — Hellcat, for example, really wants to be Batgirl, with its 20-something hip urban protagonist, its manga-cartoony art, its consciously-diverse cast and its cool-clubhouse group of super-friends (and even their foes). Phil’s Reviews #348: Gender-Friendly Comics

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #347

Secret Wars #8 (of 9) — Writer: Jonathan Hickman;  Art: Esad Ribic;  Colors: Ive Svorcina This series is now like the guest who stays at the party too long: they were entertaining a few hours ago, but now all you want to do is sweep up and lock the doors, and they’re still over at the karaoke machine….  You can’t accuse Hickman of thinking small, though, considering this issue has a cover-featured battle between a giant Thing and a Galactus controlled by Franklin Richards; there’s also a Thanos/Dr. Doom “fight,” a reunion of 3/4 of the Richards family, a bunch … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #345: Comics as Gifts for Kids

However, there are a lot of all-ages books out there, comics that aren’t too cloying or sweet, but offer smart, engaging stories and characters that both adults and kids can appreciate, and this week offers a number of examples: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 — Writers: Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder;  Art: Natacha Bustos;  Colors: Tamra Bonvillain The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl … Continue reading
