Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #356

Love and Rockets: New Stories #8 — Creators: Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez This yearly dose of new Hernandez Brothers’ work is always cause for celebration — very few creators can say they’ve been chronicling their creations’ lives for thirty years, aging them in real time (you’d have to go to daily newspaper strips like Gasoline Alley or For Better or for Worse to see anything similar, and neither of those is still publishing new material), and both brothers are still capable of tremendous storytelling. Gilbert’s the more operatic, as the many descendants of his Palomar character Luba follow film careers … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #351

Before we get to the reviews, let’s give a shout-out to DC this week: their new batch of alternative covers for their January issues involves a cool coloring-book-ready black-and-white style, perfect for both kids and adults to pick up some markers and try their hands at the profession of cartoon colorist; even if you’re the kind of fan who shudders at ruining a perfectly-collectable comic, you can always remove the special thicker-paper outer cover, because the book’s regular one is right underneath it — or, buy two copies, one to color and one to keep (then, encourage everyone else to … Continue reading

Secret Wars #8 (of 9) — Writer: Jonathan Hickman;  Art: Esad Ribic;  Colors: Ive Svorcina This series is now like the guest who stays at the party too long: they were entertaining a few hours ago, but now all you want to do is sweep up and lock the doors, and they’re still over at the karaoke machine….  You can’t accuse Hickman of thinking small, though, considering this issue has a cover-featured battle between a giant Thing and a Galactus controlled by Franklin Richards; there’s also a Thanos/Dr. Doom “fight,” a reunion of 3/4 of the Richards family, a bunch … Continue reading

All-New, All-Different Avengers #1 — Writer: Mark Waid;  Art: Adam Kubert;  Colors: Sonia Oback Uncanny Avengers #2 — Writer: Gerry Duggan;  Art: Ryan Stegman;  Colors: Richard Isanove As Marvel continues its relaunch rollout, A-N A-D Avengers is definitely the star of the week: Mark Waid brings clever plotting, deft characterization and an ability to cut right to the heart of a book’s strengths, and teaming him with a Kubert adds a visual panache that makes it even better. Wisely, this first issue doesn’t try to introduce everyone; it focuses on Sam Wilson/Captain America and Tony Stark, with the Miles Morales … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #263

So far, this has been the year of the first issue, with lots of reboots, brand-new series and plain-old-relaunches almost every week. This time, we’ve got nine first issues to look at (and there were actually a few more than that I didn’t get to), so let’s start with the obvious best-seller: Batman Eternal #1 (of 52) — Story: Scott Snyder;  Script: James Tynion IV;  Consulting Writers: Ray Fawkes, John Layman and Tim Seeley;  Art: Jason Fabok DC isn’t stupid: if you want to sell more comics, take your top-selling book and create a one-year weekly comic about it, making … Continue reading
