Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #301

Powers #1 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis; Art: Michael Avon Oeming; Colors: Nick Falardi Groo: Friends and Foes #1 (of 12) — Story/Art: Sergio Aragones; Words: Mark Evanier; Colors: Tom Luth Burning Fields #1 ( of 8 ) — Writers: Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel; Art: Colin Larimer; Colors: Joana LaFuente These are the week’s first issues that caught my eye — although two of the three are relaunches, not debuts. Powers, for example, has been around for well over a decade — but it’s going to be a TV series starting in March (on the Playstation Network, so good … Continue reading

Tooth and Claw #1 — Writer: Kurt Busiek; Art: Benjamin Dewey; Colors: Jordie Bellaire Busiek’s known for his superhero stuff, but he’s very good at sf/fantasy, too — his Arrowsmith, about World War I being fought on an alternate earth where magic works, was worthy of someone like Fritz Leiber or Poul Anderson, and his Shockrockets was a Heinleinien high-tech romp. I won’t play spoiler here, but I’ll say that it’s a satisfying conclusion, and has been his best sustained work (and certainly, if you go by publicity and movie deals, his most successful) — and that I actually cared whether the characters would live, one of … Continue reading

Rocket Raccoon #1 — Writer/Artist: Skottie Young Legendary Star-Lord #1 — Writer: Sam Humphries; Pencils: Paco Medina; Inks: Juan Vlasco Marvel’s milking their Guardians of the Galaxy franchise hard, with two new ongoing series starring individual members out this week, but they’re doing a good job of it — both books are worth a look. Rocket Raccoon is the best of the two, because Young’s art is such a wonder: fans know him from his “little kid” alternate covers to a bunch of Marvel titles over the last few years, and from his work on the various Oz books, and … Continue reading
