Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #289

Marvel 75th Anniversary Celebration #1 — Creators: Various These anniversary packages can be a drag sometimes, with too much self-importance and congratulation weighing things down, but this one gets it right: it starts with a James Robinson/Chris Samnee story about the day the FF went up in that rocket and kickstarted the Marvel Silver Age, focusing not on the event but on what a bunch of other characters were doing at the same time; it’s jammed with little bits of continuity and Easter eggs, and… well, come on, it’s Samnee art, and it’s a great opener. Then, Bruce Timm illustrates … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #97 by Dan!

All right folks, we’re back in action. Not a bad week for comics, but only a few that really stood out. Let’s do this! Elektra #1 Writer: W. Haden Blackman Artist: Mike Del Mundo The first few pages of this issue threw me off. It was a fair amount of talking, reminding the reader about just who Elektra was and what had come before. The art style is pretty jarring. But once you actually focus and see that every panel of every page is telling a story, you realize that this book is shockingly well put together. In a similar … Continue reading

All right folks, we’re here, let’s do this! Saga #11 Writer: Brian K Vaughan Artist: Fiona Staples So Saga is pretty awesome, but you knew that already, right? After last issue’s… maybe, upsetting character kill, this issue kicks you in the gut just as hard. Vaughan, as always, makes the reader care about his characters, to the point where the sci-fi weirdness is almost irrelevant. This is the kind of comic that’s accessible to anyone, it’s just really good stuff. Staples art style is something you have to get used to, but once you do, every little piece of effort … Continue reading

Another week, another set of reviews where I use the same adjective repeatedly. Let’s do this! The Black Beetle #1 Writer/Artist: Francesco Francavilla So yeah, I knew this was going to be incredibly sweet based purely on the fact that it was Francavilla doing what he wants. His art style is almost like a noir-cartoon and it’s some of the best that you’re going to find on the comic book stands. So far, in the two issues that have come out of this series, Francavilla has also shown that he can put together a coherent mystery that leaves the reader … Continue reading

Holy guacamole… I’m back! Weird scheduling gave Phil the best shipping week in a while last week, and what do I get? Well, let’s just find out! Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #6 Writer: David Hine Artist: Shaky Kane Well, this was a thing. I decided to look up the word disinterred, and got the phrase “to bring from obscurity into view” and ya know what? I’ll accept that. This book has been a plethora of strange stories that don’t even remotely tie together. Individual issues that pretend to be a cohesive mini-series based almost entirely in the world of the strange. … Continue reading
