Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #343

All-New, All-Different Avengers #1 — Writer: Mark Waid;  Art: Adam Kubert;  Colors: Sonia Oback Uncanny Avengers #2 — Writer: Gerry Duggan;  Art: Ryan Stegman;  Colors: Richard Isanove As Marvel continues its relaunch rollout, A-N A-D Avengers is definitely the star of the week: Mark Waid brings clever plotting, deft characterization and an ability to cut right to the heart of a book’s strengths, and teaming him with a Kubert adds a visual panache that makes it even better. Wisely, this first issue doesn’t try to introduce everyone; it focuses on Sam Wilson/Captain America and Tony Stark, with the Miles Morales … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #342

Uncanny X-Men #600 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Art: Sara Pichelli, Mahmud Asrar, Stuart Immonen, Eris Anka, Chris Bachalo, David Marquez and Frazer Irving Let’s start with this — not a beginning, but an ending, the conclusion to Bendis’s three-year run on both Uncanny and All-New X-Men.  It’s mostly everybody attempting to perform an intervention on Henry McCoy, calling him to task for all his messing with the time-space continuum, after which he kind of stomps out. That’s basically it, but the various flashbacks and little set pieces play to Bendis’s dialogue and character strengths, and the division into small … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #340

The Astonishing Ant-Man #1 — Writer: Nick Spencer;  Art: Ramon Rosanas;  Colors: Jordan Boyd The Uncanny Inhumans #1 — Writer: Charles Soule;  Pencils: Jay Leisten;  Inks: Steve McNiven;  Colors: Sunny Cho Karnak #1 — Writer: Warren Ellis;  Art: Gerardo Zaffino;  Colors: Dan Brown Marvel continues its reboot rollout with three new titles this week:  Ant-Man has some imaginative ideas from Spencer — like a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who’s created an Uber-like app for supervillains: need a hero assassinated? It’ll find whoever’s closest and dispatch them to do the job, as Scott Lang finds out to his dismay. There’s a little … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #339

Marvel continues their new-issue rollout with seven first issues this week, plus three Secret Wars conclusions, some DC books, six indy debuts and the usual suspects. Let’s look: The New Avengers #1 — Writer: Al Ewing;  Art: Gerardo Sandoval;  Colors: Dono Sanchez Almara The Uncanny Avengers #1 — Writer: Gerry Duggan;  Art: Ryan Stegman;  Colors: Richard Isanove A couple of Avengers beginnings: New Avengers has a team run and financed by Robert DeCosta/Sunspot; he’s the new head of A.I.M. (long story), but now it stands for “Avengers Idea Mechanics,” and they have their own island off the coast of California … Continue reading
