It Came From the Back Room #24

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed, this amounts to a two-year project. This week, we’re on the letter “H”: specifically, Marvel’s Green Goliath: The Incredible Hulk The Hulk, a Stan Lee/Jack Kirby riff on the Jekyll and Hyde archetype, is one of the earliest Silver Age Marvel characters, first appearing in his own series in the May 1962-dated Hulk #1. In this earliest incarnation, Bruce Banner’s monstrous alter-ego is … Continue reading

Fresh Eyes on Old Books #24

All right folks, it’s been a long weekend, the X-men movie was rad, and now I’m reading old stuff.  Let’s do this! Hawkman #5 from 1964 So I completely don’t understand the Shadow Thief.  He’s a guy who steals stuff, but is basically like Kitty Pryde, unable to be touched.  But how does he steal things if he’s only a shadow?  It’s logic like this that makes me smarter than the 60s!  Hawkman is using his bow and arrow to try to shoot the Shadow Thief, and this story is all about finding a way to stop the untouchable villain.  … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #24

All right folks, the X-men movie is out, and I haven’t seen it yet.  Do not spoil it for me… I warnin’ ya’!  Let’s do this! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Secret Seven #1 Writer: Peter Milligan Artist: George Pérez This series is the exact kind of story that these mini series should be.  You draw in the classic people with Pérez art, you draw in the indie crowd with Hellblazer‘s Milligan and what you get is pure F-ing insanity.  There’s so much going on here, and it’s almost completely independent to the Flashpoint series … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #197

Uncanny X-Men #537 — Writer: Kieron Gillen;  Pencils: Terry Dodson;  Inks: Rachel Dodson The two main X-books are in good hands right now: here, Gillen is in the middle of a sequel to Joss Whedon’s “Breakworld” story, and it’s the point in the narrative where things are going very badly for… well, everyone, but especially for Kitty, who’s the focus of this issue. Solid characterization, with clear motives even for the bad guy, and the Dodsons’ art is both pretty and expressive enough to make Kitty’s wordless attempts to get help poignant and clear. Lots of good bits (Wolverine to … Continue reading
