Fresh Eye on Old Books #14 by Dan!
Here we are back for another round of me judging books that came out before I was born! Whoo! Superman 200 from 1967 So this was an “imaginary story” meaning it has absolutely no consequence on the main Superman mythos. To say the least, it was a lot of fun. The bottle city of Kandor is replace by Superman’s home city, Brainiac is a good guy, and Kal-El’s younger brother Knor-El takes over as the new Superman. However, things go bad when Knor is exposed to kryptonite, and Kal-El has to save him. Cue to a crazy-random-happenstance where Green Kryptonite … Continue reading

It’s a Sunday afternoon, so we all know what that means! Old-timey comics! Conan The Barbarian #8 from 1971 Oh the Bronze Age… A little less lighthearted than the Silver Age, and nowhere near as gritty as the present. So we get titles like Conan. You might remember the Schwarzenneger movie of the same name, but surprise(!)… there was a comic first. This issue of Conan is exactly what you’d expect it to be, a quest for treasure, an enemy that becomes a friend, and Conan having to run away from someone trying to capture him. Once you add in … Continue reading

Now it’s time for me to read some more old stuff and use excessive amounts of exclamation points!!! Let’s! Do! This! Fantastic Four #64 from 1967 This is a Kirby comic. There’s no better way to describe what comes from this issue. A combination of weird blocky robots, the Fantastic Four being fantastic, and the Inhumans lead to an exact representation of what Jack Kirby did for the medium. It has the main evidence of Kirby’s styles in the huge drawings of machinery, Kirby dots, and big splash pages of action. Not to mention that it’s a lot of fun. … Continue reading

All right folks, it’s another dose of opinionated Silver/Bronze Age analysis. Let’s do this! Amazing Spider-Man #88 from 1970 I was a little disappointed in this issue. It was extremely misleading on the cover! Probably only half the book was actually Doc Ock’s phantom legs attacking random people. The rest was the usual Silver Age Spidey goodness. It’s exactly what you’d expect from this Stan Lee/John Romita plethora of team ups from this era. It’s absolute quality stuff that’s very simple to look at and enjoy. Doc Ock captures some Chinese general (complete with stereotypical Asian designs) and Spiderman has … Continue reading

Watching football and reading old comics on a Sunday, pleasant to say the least. Doctor Strange #170 from 1968 By this point in the Mighty Marvel Manner, Stan Lee hadn’t been writing nearly as much. So what you do get is the sweet Roy Thomas work on Dr. Strange, which is completely worth it. Nightmare is a pretty doofy villain, and honestly he was defeated by being wrapped in a cloak. That’s not a joke. But the issue itself was pretty enjoyable. Artist Dan Adkins was doing his best Ditko impression, and was fairly successful. What’s best about Strange books … Continue reading
