Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #278

There weren’t quite as many good comics this week as in the last few months — summer is definitely starting to wind down — but still more than enough to make a decent reading pile. Let’s look… Captain Marvel #6 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick;  Art: David Lopez This is the end of the book’s first arc, and it’s been a smart, stylish space story, with Carol helping the population of an oppressed planet against a seemingly-overwhelming military force (this issue’s scenes of an unarmed people protesting against heavily-armored authority figures echoes, quite by chance, recent events out of Missouri), … Continue reading

She-Hulk #5 — Writer: Charles Soule;  Art: Ron Wimberly Captain Marvel #4 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick;  Art: David Lopez Lumberjanes #3 — Writers: Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis;  Art: Brook Allen Bee and Puppycat #2 — Writers: Natasha Allegri and Garrett Jackson;  Art: Natasha Allegri Four comics this week starring women — two superhero and two cartoony/kid-oriented. Superhero first: both of the offerings here stand out because neither emphasizes the adolescent-male-fantasy demographic of, say,  DC’s “Bombshell” covers; these are fully-realized characters, not shallow shells. Beasts of Burden: Hunters and Gatherers #1 (of 1) — Writer: Evan Dorkin;  Art: Jill Thompson This title, about a group of dogs and cats who fight supernatural menaces to their small town, doesn’t come out very often — once or twice a year if we’re lucky — but it’s always worth the wait, and always ends up on the top of my list. Dorkin is mostly known for his humor (Bill and Ted, back in the day, and Milk and Cheese and Dork, plus the about-to-be released Eltingville Club, a savage-but-loving takedown of comics fans which no one who’s … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #54 by Dan!

All right folks, we all survived Free Comic Book Day, the Phoenix con, the San Diego Con and the Fourth of July, so we’re back in the business of buying comics. Are you out of money? Too bad! It was a huge week with plenty of great stuff, so let’s dive right in and do this! (Sorry in advance, but the big books, to me, this week were all Marvels. DC just got boring this week, so deal with it.) The Infernal Man-Thing #2 Writer: Steve Gerber Artist: Kevin Nowlan I don’t know the back story on this, just that … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #15 by Dan!

All right folks!  It was a seriously huge week, so let’s get down to business! My Top 5 (The 5 Best Comics of the Week) Fantastic Four #587 Writer: Jonathan Hickman, Artist: Steve Epting I am shocked.  I really have not cared about the Hickman FF run at all.  I found it boring, pretentious and convoluted.  Then the last six pages of this issue happened.  I know that you’ve probably all heard about the death, but I don’t feel like spoiling it.  Just know that it was in a super bad-ass take no prisoners, kicking and screaming kinda way, adding … Continue reading
