Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #265

Amazing Spider-Man #1 — Writer: Dan Slott; Art: Humberto Ramos; Inks: Victor Olazaba So, the odds of Marvel releasing a new Spider-Man #1, with Peter Parker back to normal, 24 hours before the debut of the new Spider-Man movie, were… 100%. Amazing! Canny, too — the editorial and creative teams deserve a lot of credit for taking the “old” Spidey away from us for so long, and building up anticipation for his return; I think we’ve all missed him. Good to have him back, too — the “standard” cover on this book seems a little goofy at first, but it’s … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #263

So far, this has been the year of the first issue, with lots of reboots, brand-new series and plain-old-relaunches almost every week. This time, we’ve got nine first issues to look at (and there were actually a few more than that I didn’t get to), so let’s start with the obvious best-seller: Batman Eternal #1 (of 52) — Story: Scott Snyder; Script: James Tynion IV; Consulting Writers: Ray Fawkes, John Layman and Tim Seeley; Art: Jason Fabok DC isn’t stupid: if you want to sell more comics, take your top-selling book and create a one-year weekly comic about it, making … Continue reading

All right folks, it’s a lighter week so we won’t have a lot to talk about. But there’s still plenty of great stuff out there, so let’s do this! Daredevil #1 Writer: Mark Waid Artist: Chris Samnee Waid and Samnee ended their seminal run on Daredevil by revealing his identity and moving him to California. So now Waid and Samnee are back with an all-new location a possibly new set of characters and a lot of space to just roam. And roam they do. This issue acts as set-up (including a quick origin that is presented beautifully), Daredevil manages to … Continue reading

Let’s start with the Marvel output this week, since there are a couple of new first issues: Ms. Marvel #1 — Writer: G. Willow Wilson; Art: Adrian Alphona This one’s gotten some press coverage, since the title character, Kamala, is a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and a Muslim. Wilson does a good job of making her a normal kid; she hangs out at the Marvel equivalent of a Circle K with a couple of friends before school, writes Avengers fanfic, fights with her parents about wanting to go to parties with boys, sneaks out to do it, and then a … Continue reading

All right folks, we’re back in action. A smaller week, but lots of good stuff, so let’s do this! The Saviors #2 Writer: James Robinson Artist: J. Bone Picking up right where the first issue left off, Saviors kicks up the action with Tomas fleeing from a weird flying lizard dude that used to be the sheriff. He gets rescued by another guy, who has some of the answers, but not quite everything. They run off to Mexico, but the sheriff seems to already know pieces of the plan. Robinson’s writing is at its best when he has some type … Continue reading
