The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #60 by Dan!

I’m in a good mood, so these reviews might be positive. But now I’m in a bad mood because I just found out Amazon purchases will charge Arizona residents sales tax, so these reviews might be angry. Let’s find out! FF #23 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Nick Dragotta This book is without a doubt the best of the week. We’re in this weird transition stage, and this is the week where four main Marvel titles come to their end. While other titles reestablish the status quo (more on that later), this issue takes a different approach. It’s upsetting and depressing … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #234

Hawkeye #3 — Writer: Matt Fraction;  Art: David Aja;  Color: Matt Hollingsworth;  Letters: Chris Eliopoulos Daredevil #19 — Writer: Mark Waid;  Art: Chris Samnee; Color: Javier Rodriguez These two comics make me happy — they’re both confident, highly polished storytelling efforts, with writers who know how to create subtle, intriguing characters and slambang action plots, and artists who know how to break that action into fast-moving panels with crystal-clear composition and sharp, smooth lines. Special call-outs to the colorists of each book, too, who know just how to highlight, and when to be subdued, and whose palettes enhance the art … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #59 by Dan!

Ooooh boy I’m back! After traditional, respectful and insightful reviews from good ol’ Phil the last two weeks, it’s back to fart jokes, fat jokes and everything in between. Let’s do this! Uncanny Avengers #1 Writer: Rick Remender Artist: John Cassaday Well, this was a crazy thing, wasn’t it? After the ‘meh’ wrap up of AvX, something big needed to show up and make things all right. This book exceeded expectations, which is what you’re looking for from a flagship title. Cassaday’s art is a guaranteed victory, but it’s the plot that really drives this issue from good to great. … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #233

Avengers Vs X-Men #12 (of 12) — Writer: Jason Aaron;  Pencils: Adam Kubert;  Inks: John Dell with Mark Morales and Adam Kubert This may not be the best book of the week, but it’s the best seller, and it’s been surprisingly good — partly because the last few Marvel events, especially Fear Itself, lowered expectations considerably. Aaron is a good choice for writer — he doesn’t have some of the stylistic tics in dialogue of a Bendis or a Fraction, so he doesn’t call attention to his writing, and lets the art and action speak for itself, while Kubert holds … Continue reading
