The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #93 by Dan!

It was a weirdly light week full of strange books, so let’s get right to this folks! Daredevil #36 Writer: Mark Waid Artist: Chris Samnee This issue brings an end to a lot of different things for Matt Murdock. Waid has built this story for a couple years, improving Murdock’s life while always letting him have a different new problem to deal with. Waid built stories that didn’t come off as aggressively depressing like his predecessors, and he found a delicate balance between all the conflicts that Murdock had to deal with. This series will just reset with a new … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #267

Since there are a fair number of books this week, let’s be different and break them down by company…. Deadly Class #1 — Writer: Rick Remender;  Art: Wes Craig Pretty Deadly #4 — Writer: Kelly Sue Deconnick;  Art: Emma Rios Bad Dog #6 (of 6) — Writer: Joe Casey;  Art: Diego Greco Image’s business model — for a set administrative fee, they provide a publishing platform for creators, who retain all rights to their work — has attracted a number of excellent writers and artists over the last few years, and led to a sprawling, diverse group of titles. All right kids, let’s do this! Shaolin Cowboy #3 Writer/Artist: Geof Darrow There’s uh… there’s not a lot to say about this comic. For the past two months our titular hero has been fighting the never-ending zombie horde. What that has led to is a series of two-page spreads of a dude with a long stick with two chainsaws attached fighting and fighting until he runs out of gas. Well, about 30 pages later, he finally runs out of gas. So then we get two-page spreads of a dude jumping from head to head over the zombies to try to … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #88 by Dan!

Whoa! No tie-ins to Infinity worth talking about this week, and not much on the Forever Evil front (we’ll cover that soon)… just some random great stuff. Let’s do this! Deadpool #19 Writers: Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan Artist: Declan Shalvey Welp. This took a very aggressive turn didn’t it? Deadpool was trying to shut down the company that was harvesting his organs (don’t worry… they grow back; healing factor, etc.. It’s led him to Korea with Captain America and Wolverine. It was all fun and games until all this background of Deadpool came out. Then it just got way, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #261

Velvet #1 — Writer: Ed Brubaker;  Art: Steve Epting Image’s creator-owned titles have just been knocking it out of the park (ooh, World Series baseball metaphors!) all year, and this one is no exception; it’s by an established team (Brubaker and Epting spent years together on their well-regarded Captain America run), within an established genre (’60s/’70s-style spy thrillers, ala James Bond or Man From U.N.C.L.E.), but with an interesting twist (it focuses on the secretary/love interest of the spy agency, normally a throwaway character, who of course turns out to be much more than she seems). Brubaker is very good … Continue reading
