Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #276
Fatale #24 (of 24) — Writer: Ed Brubaker; Art: Sean Phillips Hawkeye #19 — Writer: Matt Fraction; Art: David Aja Sandman: Overture #3 (of 6) — Writer: Neil Gaiman; Art: J. H. Williams III Outcast #2 — Writer: Robert Kirkman; Art: Paul Azaceta These first four books are linked simply because they’re all good stories from top creative teams, and representative of the best that weekly serial comics have to offer. Fatale is the last issue, and a definite, and satisfying, conclusion to the story; Brubaker and Phillips have been offering effective crime/noir books for a decade now, since Sleeper, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #271
Let’s try looking at all the non-mainstream-superhero stuff first this week, and then the DC and Marvel offerings: Outcast #1 — Writer: Robert Kirkman; Art: Paul Azaceta Kirkman’s new monthly comic series got a nice writeup in Tuesday’s USA Today; that’s what originating a number-one cable hit like The Walking Dead will do for you. It’s an Exorcist riff, about a guy who dealt with demonic possession as a kid (him? His mother? Much later, his wife? It’s only the first issue, so the backstory isn’t clear yet), and now, a damaged adult, reluctantly helps others with similar problems. Kirkman’s skill at … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #268
Trees #1 — Writer: Warren Ellis; Art: Jason Howard Ellis is, at base, an sf guy — his earliest big hit, Transmetropolitan, was a near-future, high-tech riff on Hunter S. Thompson, and he has a soft spot for space opera, aliens, hard-science speculation, and all the other trappings of the genre. This offering is a good example: ten years ago, huge tree-trunk-like alien constructs plopped down all over the world, as casually as humans would plop the legs of a barbecue grill down over an ant colony, and ever since they’ve sat there, occasionally venting toxic waste and otherwise inscrutably … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #92 by Dan!
All right folks, we’re back in action. A smaller week, but lots of good stuff, so let’s do this! The Saviors #2 Writer: James Robinson Artist: J. Bone Picking up right where the first issue left off, Saviors kicks up the action with Tomas fleeing from a weird flying lizard dude that used to be the sheriff. He gets rescued by another guy, who has some of the answers, but not quite everything. They run off to Mexico, but the sheriff seems to already know pieces of the plan. Robinson’s writing is at its best when he has some type … Continue reading

Phil”s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #264
Young Avengers #13 — Writer: Kieron Gillen; Art: Jamie McKelvie I know I put this at the top of my list every time it comes out, and you’re probably tired of hearing about it, but I don’t care: it’s been a wonderful series, with pretty and precise art, great characterization and plotting, and a smooth teamwork between Gillen and McKelvie that’s just made the whole story hum and surge like a racing-car engine. This ends the big story/fight, and resolves a number of issues, especially involving Loki; the final two books will be mostly a well-deserved curtain call and wrap-up … Continue reading
