Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #286

Yet another week with a large number of first issues, including a couple of highly-advertised Big Event books from Marvel and DC. Before getting to those, however, there are a couple of less-hyped, but more worthy, books to mention… Batgirl #35 — Writers: Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher;  Breakdowns: Cameron Stewart;  Art: Babs Tarr Strictly speaking, this isn’t a first issue, but it’s a “soft reboot” of the title, with a new creative team, location, look and tone for the character, so it should count. Also, it turns out to be really good: I was skeptical of a couple of … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #89 by Dan!

All right folks, events are ending, things are happening and comic books are still coming out. Let’s do this! Infinity #6 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Jim Cheung w/Dustin Weaver New Avengers #12 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Mike Deodato Hmm…without really ending, Infinity comes to a close. If the real villain was Thanos, then the story is wrapped up, but it’s really hard to say after you read New Avengers. Whoa! No tie-ins to Infinity worth talking about this week, and not much on the Forever Evil front (we’ll cover that soon)… just some random great stuff. Let’s do this! Deadpool #19 Writers: Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan Artist: Declan Shalvey Welp. This took a very aggressive turn didn’t it? Deadpool was trying to shut down the company that was harvesting his organs (don’t worry… they grow back; healing factor, etc.. It’s led him to Korea with Captain America and Wolverine. It was all fun and games until all this background of Deadpool came out. Then it just got way, … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #80 by Dan!

All right folks! we’re back. Lots of good stuff this week, so let’s do this! Dial H #15 Writer: China Mieville Artist: Alberto Ponticelli Welp, another one bites the dust! Like Demon Knights next week, this is the latest book to get the axe from DC. But holey moley!, does this thing go out with style. The increased price is to compensate for almost double the amount of story content and boy, do they throw a lot out here! The Dials themselves get fully explained, everyone has a proper motivation, the big villain gets his just comeuppance as strangely as … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #78 by Dan!

Surprise attack! I’m back! That’s right, after last week’s insanity of goodness, I’m back for more! Let’s do this! Satellite Sam #1 Writer: Matt Fraction Artist: Howard Chaykin So. Fraction clearly wrote this book specifically to get Chaykin to draw it right? You’ve got the old-timey 50s style mixed with pin-ups and sci-fi that isn’t quite sci-fi. It might as well be called “Matt Fraction Presents: Something I Wanted Howard Chaykin to Draw.” This beginning overall is a pretty sweet comic. Satellite Sam is a live sci-fi TV show in New York, but the star is conspicuously absent, so his … Continue reading
