Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #260

After all those weeks of DC 3-D books, let’s take a break from the Marvel and DC heroes, and look at all the cool comics published by other companies this week instead: Battling Boy Graphic Novel #1 — Writer/Artist: Paul Pope Pope’s art is like a fusion of Jack Kirby and Robert Crumb; he’s got all their crackling energy and sure lines, and straddles the divide between mainstream superheroics and underground anarchy just perfectly. He’ll work for a major company, but on his own terms (see the remarkable Batman: Year 100), but he’s always been happiest charting his own course, … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #258

Yes, yes, we’ll get to all of those fancy DC villain books in a minute (even though, contrary to this column’s title, I didn’t buy all of them — but, hey, without credits on the cover, I figure you need some sort of quick description of each one, to see which will be worth your time) — but first, let’s look at the regular titles that stood out this week: Astro City #4 — Writer: Kurt Busiek; Art: Brent Eric Anderson This was the best book of the week the last time it came out, too, and it’ll probably be … Continue reading

There are a lot of good non-corporate, creator-owned books out right now (this has been a great year for them), so let’s start with those this week: Saga #13 — Writer: Brian K. Vaughan; Art: Fiona Staples This is revving up again after a few months’ absence (the creative team takes a break after each six-issue volume), and the cover helps to show why Staples, the artist, has been such a big part of its becoming a hit: the eyes are drawn to the cute baby first, and the lifelike eyes, but then they notice the horns… and the fact … Continue reading

Lots of first (and a couple of second) issues out this week, so let’s start with those: Ghosted #1 — Writer: Joshua Williamson; Art: Goran Sudzuka A very rich old guy breaks a criminal mastermind out of jail, to put together a team to enter a haunted house that’s about to be torn down, and bring back a real ghost from it. High-concept but kind of low execution, since if you poke at the plot it starts to unravel like a cheap blanket (if he’s that rich, why break the mastermind out in a bloody prison break? There are lots … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #251

Astro City #1 — Writer: Kurt Busiek; Art: Brent Anderson A new Astro City is always cause for celebration: Busiek and Anderson (plus Alex Ross on the covers) have been telling tales of this book’s title town for almost 20 years, and they’re always clever, human explorations of the superhero genre, packed with interesting characters and situations. Busiek’s been sick for the last few years, and unable to work on a comic as labor-intensive as this one — so the fact that this is a new ongoing series is good news, both for him and for us: check out the … Continue reading
