Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #260

Sergio Aragones Funnies #12 — Writer/Artist: Duh…. Aragones says in the introduction that this is the last issue of this title from Bongo, but that it will continue at another publisher soon. Good, because we can’t afford to lose his meticulous, well-composed, funny pen — look at that cover (click on it for a larger version)! As always, the best thing about having his own comic is that he gets to stretch out from the one-panel and one-page Mad magazine gags he’s famous for; here, there’s an eight-page story of a loser trying to dress up and act like a … Continue reading
The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #93 by Dan!

It was a weirdly light week full of strange books, so let’s get right to this folks! Daredevil #36 Writer: Mark Waid Artist: Chris Samnee This issue brings an end to a lot of different things for Matt Murdock. Waid has built this story for a couple years, improving Murdock’s life while always letting him have a different new problem to deal with. Waid built stories that didn’t come off as aggressively depressing like his predecessors, and he found a delicate balance between all the conflicts that Murdock had to deal with. This series will just reset with a new … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #259

Yet another week with lots of first issues; comics fans certainly can’t complain about a lack of new options this year! Let’s start with Marvel, who are offering three brand-new titles (even though they’re all revivals…): She-Hulk #1 — Writer: Charles Soule; Art: Javier Pulido This is a well-done first issue: it takes the best ideas from the character’s previous run (especially that she’s a lawyer specializing in superhero legislation, meaning her stories can involve practically anyone in the Marvel universe), adds a new wrinkle (she quits her job at her current law firm, and has to decide what to … Continue reading

Let’s start with the Marvel output this week, since there are a couple of new first issues: Ms. Marvel #1 — Writer: G. Willow Wilson; Art: Adrian Alphona This one’s gotten some press coverage, since the title character, Kamala, is a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and a Muslim. Wilson does a good job of making her a normal kid; she hangs out at the Marvel equivalent of a Circle K with a couple of friends before school, writes Avengers fanfic, fights with her parents about wanting to go to parties with boys, sneaks out to do it, and then a … Continue reading

All right folks, we’re back in action. A smaller week, but lots of good stuff, so let’s do this! The Saviors #2 Writer: James Robinson Artist: J. Bone Picking up right where the first issue left off, Saviors kicks up the action with Tomas fleeing from a weird flying lizard dude that used to be the sheriff. He gets rescued by another guy, who has some of the answers, but not quite everything. They run off to Mexico, but the sheriff seems to already know pieces of the plan. Robinson’s writing is at its best when he has some type … Continue reading
