The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #92 by Dan!

All right folks, we’re back in action. A smaller week, but lots of good stuff, so let’s do this! The Saviors #2 Writer: James Robinson Artist: J. Bone Picking up right where the first issue left off, Saviors kicks up the action with Tomas fleeing from a weird flying lizard dude that used to be the sheriff. He gets rescued by another guy, who has some of the answers, but not quite everything. They run off to Mexico, but the sheriff seems to already know pieces of the plan. Robinson’s writing is at its best when he has some type … Continue reading

The Latest and (Mostly) Greatest #91 by Dan!

Hi folks, we’re back! I have nothing important to say at this moment, so let’s do this! Miracleman #1 Writers/Artists: Various What a weird book this is! Alan Moore wants no part of it, so the reprints say they’re by “the original writer”. There’s also an interview with the creator of  Miracleman, Mick Anglo, and a Golden Age reprint of a story. The first story by Moore and artist Garry Leach is worth noting. Legal issues have tied up these reprints for years, and made the back issues higher priced and harder to find. The story is absolutely fantastic! It’s … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #265

Sergio Aragones Funnies #11 — Creator: Sergio Aragones Aragones had some back problems earlier this year, and this book stopped coming out, but they’ve been fixed and he’s returned, and that’s welcome news: he’s one of our greatest living cartoonists. People who think of him only as the guy who does the marginal gags in Mad might be surprised at just how good a storyteller he is, but a comic like this lets him stretch out and show his versatility: there’s a memoir about getting Mad editor William Gaines a present, a horror story with a neat twist, a “war” … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #256

There are a lot of good non-corporate, creator-owned books out right now (this has been a great year for them), so let’s start with those this week: Saga #13 — Writer: Brian K. Vaughan;  Art: Fiona Staples This is revving up again after a few months’ absence (the creative team takes a break after each six-issue volume), and the cover helps to show why Staples, the artist, has been such a big part of its becoming a hit: the eyes are drawn to the cute baby first, and the lifelike eyes, but then they notice the horns… and the fact … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #254

Like last week, there were a bunch of first issues released this Wednesday, so let’s start with those: The Invincible Haggard West (Battling Boy preview) — Creator: Paul Pope For $2.99, this offers 32 pages of full-color Pope art, involving a jetpack-equipped hero defending kids against creepy mutants in a crumbling urban setting. It’s both a self-contained story and a setup/sneak peek at Pope’s new graphic novel series, Battling Boy, due out in a few months, but hey: reread this paragraph’s first sentence, and that’s all you need to know to understand why this is easily my book of the … Continue reading
