Avengers Movie Review first: go see it. A small series of misadventures left us walking into the theater halfway into the previews (so I missed the Dark Knight trailer), and meant we had to sit in the second row — but it was a 3D movie, and it turns out that’s the perfect spot for me; I’m nearsighted in one eye, and farsighted in the other, so 3D effects don’t work well, but when it’s that close they work fine. Even better, Harkins is wise enough to invest in good theater seats with comfortable headrests that lean back easily, so … Continue reading
America’s Got Powers #1 (of 6) — Writer: Jonathan Ross; Art: Bryan Hitch Ross is the former British talk-show host who’s a big comics geek, and has dabbled in writing them before (Turf, about Prohibition-era vampires, came out a year or two ago). Here, he’s snagged Bryan Hitch as artist, which helps his cause considerably. The comic itself is nakedly commercial: it’s a mashup of J. Michael Straczynski’s Rising Stars (radiation from a mysterious meteor causes a bunch of kids whose mothers are exposed to it to be born with super-powers), America’s Got Talent (there’s a reality show wherein the … Continue reading
Dark Horse Presents #8 — Creators: Various Actually, the list of creators for this book pretty much is the review: for $8, you get ten eight-page stories, including a new Beasts of Burden with the usual lush, expressive art by Jill Thompson, and a script from Evan Dorkin that’s a perfect blend of gentle humor and, at the end, stark horror (who knew that sheep could provide both?). Other stories include a new B.P.R.D. dealing with the aftermath over the death of Hellboy, chapters of Neal Adams’ and Howard Chaykin’s ongoing serials, the first installment of The Massive, Brian Wood’s … Continue reading
Fables #112 — Writer: Bill Willingham; Pencils: Mark Buckingham; Inks: Steve Leialoha, Andrew Pepoy and Dan Green In a week that’s a holiday gift to readers — after what’s turned into a great year for comics, there were at least a dozen noteworthy ones just this Wednesday — Fables gets first position this week because it’s a Christmas story, of sorts. While we check in with most of the current subplots (but not the one involving Bufkin, Willingham leaving his fate, literally, hanging), the main thread involves Rose Red and a story about hope, taking its structure from A Christmas … Continue reading
And just like that we’re back folks. I survived San Diego, and only lost a finger! (joke). Let’s do this. (head’s up, I didn’t review League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. That pretentious mess is not for me. ((cue internet explosion))) Secret Wariors 28 Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Alessandro Vitti So Secret Warriors comes to its logical conclusion with more of a whimper than you might expect. However, when you think about it in the long run, it’s not that unexpected. This title has been running along with its usual flair for the dramatic, so a subdued final issue is to be … Continue reading
