Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #308

The Surface #1 — Writer: Ales Kot;  Art: Langdon Foss;  Colors: Jordie Bellaire Quite a few first issues again this week, with an interesting mix of sf, fantasy adventure and comedy. The Surface is sf, set in a near-future where everyone’s high-tech enough that the fad is “livelogging,” where you wear cameras and mics 24/7, and your whole life gets downloaded — but not everyone is satisfied absorbing all that digital data, and there’s another reality trying to break through…. Ales tried something similar to this with last year’s Change, although this new series seems a lot more linear, and … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #271

Let’s try looking at all the non-mainstream-superhero stuff first this week, and then the DC and Marvel offerings: Outcast #1 — Writer: Robert Kirkman;  Art: Paul Azaceta Kirkman’s new monthly comic series got a nice writeup in Tuesday’s USA Today; that’s what originating a number-one cable hit like The Walking Dead will do for you. It’s an Exorcist riff, about a guy who dealt with demonic possession as a kid (him? His mother? Much later, his wife? It’s only the first issue, so the backstory isn’t clear yet), and now, a damaged adult, reluctantly helps others with similar problems. Kirkman’s skill at … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #264

Captain Action Cat: The Timestream Catastrophe #1 — Writers: Franco, Chris “Zod” Smits, and Art Baltazar; Art: Art Baltazar Everybody knows Baltazar and Franco, right — Tiny Titans? Superman Family Adventures? Baltazar’s art epitomizes “fun,” and his bold layouts and colors are super-attractive to younger kids; I don’t know anyone under, say, seven years old who can resist them. Add in enough clever references to “real” continuity to keep adults entertained, too, and those DC books were some wonderful parent/child comics-bonding issues. In this new offering, the team takes their own creation, Action Cat, and sets up a crossover with … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews: Stuff I Bought #258

Let’s start with the Marvel output this week, since there are a couple of new first issues: Ms. Marvel #1 — Writer: G. Willow Wilson;  Art: Adrian Alphona This one’s gotten some press coverage, since the title character, Kamala, is a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants, and a Muslim. Wilson does a good job of making her a normal kid; she hangs out at the Marvel equivalent of a Circle K with a couple of friends before school, writes Avengers fanfic, fights with her parents about wanting to go to parties with boys, sneaks out to do it, and then a … Continue reading

It Came From the Back Room #5

Standard recap: I’m slowly going through AABC’s one-million-plus back-issue room, restocking the boxes on the sales floor and pulling stuff to sell as discount/overstock/special items. I’m going through the alphabet backwards (don’t ask), and at my speed (especially with the school year now in full gear), this amounts to a two-year project. I’ve currently finished the indy “M” books, and have started on the Marvel and DC “M” stuff.  Here are some of the titles I’ve been encountering: Ms. Tree For everyone who thinks that crime comics started with Brian Bendis or Ed Brubaker, here’s a true hard-boiled gem, an undeservedly-overlooked … Continue reading
