Walt Kelly Original Art!
For your viewing pleasure: a piece of original art I bought on eBay last week, a Pogo Sunday page from 1965 by the great, great Mr. Walt Kelly: All collectors have a “grail list,” of the items they dream of finding. I started collecting original art early enough to be able to own a few of mine — a Jack Kirby Thor page I got over a decade ago, a Gene Colan Tomb of Dracula page, a Jim Aparo Batman Brave and the Bold cover, and some others — but lately I’ve despaired of getting any more, especially by the … Continue reading
It Came From the Back Room #34
We’re interrupting the back-issue specials (still on FF — and, as I warned you all two weeks ago, those $1 Byrne issues are disappearing fast) for another original art/comics display, this one involving the DC character Jonah Hex, as drawn by one of my favorite artists: Tim Truman. Something different this week: I’m working on the letter “F” now — specifically, back issues of Flash — but I’ll cover the discount stuff from that in my next posting, once it’s all finished and available on the cover price racks. Instead, since it turned out that we had so many cool (and key) Silver Age issues of … Continue reading

Gene Colan Art Exhibit
Here are the five Colan pages being displayed at the store this week, through Saturday — and at the July 4 sale! — and, no, none of them are being sold….: This is from Tomb of Dracula #9, page 10; inks by Vince Colletta and words by Marv Wolfman. Evan Dorkin said last week that Colan’s art was like “dreams on paper,” and this is a good example: the hand-drawn panel borders radiating from the center; the use of … is it whiteout?… to indicate fog; the bottom image of Dracula on the ground in the shadows, weak but still … Continue reading
