Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Bought #172

Batman #700 — Writer: Grant Morrison; Artists: Tony Daniel, David Finch, Andy Kubert and Frank Quitely One look at the credits should be enough to get you to buy this: it’s a past/present/future time-travel tale involving Bruce/Dick/Damian as Batmen, chasing after the Joker’s notebook and encountering ’60s super-villain team-ups, locked-room mysteries, future Two-Faces and Joker babies. Morrison throws out his Bat-ideas like sparks, and it all hangs together and does everything an anniversary issue should; even that Neal Adams Batman preview that’s been in all the other DC books this month makes a pitch-perfect little coda. Buzzard #1 (of 3) … Continue reading

Phil’s Reviews — Stuff I Read and Put Back #172

Avengers Academy #1 — Writer: Christos Gage;  Art: Mike McKone Young Allies #1 — Writer: Sean McKeever;  Pencils: David Baldeon;  Inks: N. Bowling Marvel’s launching two new kid-group books this week, probably not the smartest marketing move — especially since Academy, with its Avengers-franchise tie-in, threatens to suck away any potential sales from the less-advertised and unaffiliated Young Allies. Too bad, since they’re both decent-enough efforts, with both Gage and McKeever good at assembling their casts, giving them distinct personalities, and throwing in enough plot twists and conflict to get readers to come back for more (artwise, McKone’s a little … Continue reading

Phil-In: Stuff I Bought

Now the good stuff, unless you think I’m wrong, in which case you’re probably wrong, so it’s still the good stuff! The Bulletproof Coffin Writer: David Hine Artist: Shaky Kane Why yes, I did buy this based purely on the fact that I remember Shaky Kane from One cover of Morrison’s Doom Patrol.  Please don’t judge me.  This was absolutely awesome and I can’t even begin to explain why.  Kane has a combo style of Moebius and Darrow, and that is the best compliment I can give.  We don’t have many copies of this indy book, so get it while … Continue reading

Phil-In: Stuff I Read and Put Back

So the summer of the trade off begins!  Phil and I will be switching off on these reviews every week, so that means I need some kind of new title.  If you have any good ideas, send them in, but for now I’m sticking with “Phil-in” even though it’s completely not applicable anymore! Darkstar and the Winter Guard #1 (of 3) Writer: David Gallaher Artist: Steve Ellis The latest in a long line of “wait… Marvel is publishing what?” style comics brings us the Russian team you’ve all been waiting for!  But really, why does this exist?  The Agents of … Continue reading

Phil's Reviews: Stuff I Bought #170

The Avengers #1 — Writer: Brian Michael Bendis;  Pencils: John Romita Jr.;  Inks: Klaus Janson I have to admit, reading this book makes me happy: all the Romita Jr./Janson touches, the little offhand dialogue beats, the use of Kang (last used well in that awesome Kurt Busiek arc years ago where he took over the world, put the heroes in concentration camps, and ended up fighting a giant Captain America — what else do you want in a superhero comic?), the “there’s something the matter with your kids” callback to Back To The Future: I can’t get enough of this … Continue reading
