Phil-In – Reviews by AABC Staffer Dan – Stuff I Read and Put Back:#127

This is the end folks! We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve mocked my grammar, we’ve mocked my opinions, but all in all it’s been a good time. Let’s wrap this up faster than a mediocre NBA draft!

Avengers/Invaders #12 of 12 Writer: Jim Krueger Artist: Steve Sadowski & Jack Herbert
Oh man, what a crock of B.S. this turned out to be. 12 issues to lead into the next Alex Ross “not actually written” series (Human Torch, if you’re wondering), and this is just bad. Not good for any real reason and a waste of one year worth of money and paper. We can’t kill trees for this!

Berserker #1 Writer: Rick Loverd Artist: Jeremy Haun
Oh, no thank you. This doesn’t make any sense at all. People who get slightly angry have their eyes turn black and then rip a body part off of whoever gets them mad. But don’t you get it? They’re berserk! This is not good. It’s not coherent in any way, and over the top violence doesn’t make up for it.

Unknown Soldier #9 Writer: Joshua Dysart Artist: Alberto Ponticelli
I feel like this has been hugely overhyped. There’s tons of people who seem to be praising this, and I just don’t get it. Blah Blah war drama. Blah Blah pay attention to Africa. Blah Blah not very good. That’s every issue of Unknown Soldier to me. No thank you.

Justice League of America #34 Writer: Dwayne McDuffie Artist: Eddy Barrows
Justice Society of America #38 Writer/Artist: Jerry Ordway
Oh how the DC team books have fallen. I have a feeling that both of these titles are stuck in limbo until at least Post-Blackest Night. McDuffie can’t get a break because of how they forced him to do tie-ins. Now they’ve fired him, so I guess it’ll probably fix itself. JSA is waiting for the Fables team to start on it, but if past work is any indication; one half of that team will leave, forcing Matt Sturges to do all the work. Too bad, cause these used to be good. Now, not so much.

Barack the Barbarian #1 Writer: Larry Hama Artist: Christopher Schons.
Oh. Dear. God.

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #1 Writers: Jeff Katz & James Kuhoric Artist: Jason Craig
Worth noting because it may jump up in value (according to Wizard, pshhhhhh) and it’s a generic horror story that’s kinda funny. Just not for me, so maybe you will like it. It’s got death and destruction and everything, but it’s a meh. The big “meh” of the week.

Dark Wolverine #75 Writer: Daniel Way & Marjorie Liu Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Wolverine: Weapon X #3 Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Ron Garney
I don’t really care about Wolverine too much, and this stuff just isn’t good enough. The first one is the new Darker Daken Wolverine, and it’s just mediocre. Flooding the market with Dark Reign is tiresome, and this is just not that great. And with the other hand Weapon X just hasn’t been doing it for me. Nothing special with no real relevance. Wolverine will always sit in mediocrity for me, unless it’s Old Man Logan, the greatest story ever written.

Superman 689 Writer: James Robinson Artist: Renato Guedes
Guedes is a great artist, but this whole Superman story seems to have gone off the rails. It’s like they are waiting for their turn after Blackest Night and the Batman relaunch. This issue specifically seems to have had no point. A series of one page shots of Mon-El running around the world. Useless, that’s all this has been, and the Super titles have pretty much lost me.

Dark Reign Elektra #4 Writer: Zeb Wells Artist: Clay Mann
Dark Reign The Hood #2 Writer: Jeff Parker Artist: Hotz
Dark Reign Lethal Legion #1 Writer: Frank Tieri Artist: Mateus Santolouco
Dark Reign Sinister Spider-Man #1 Writer: Brian Reed Artist: Chris Bachalo
Dark Reign Zodiac #1 Writer: Joe Casey Artist: Nathan Fox
Hello flooded market, nice to meet you. Notice a pattern here folks? Remember how I was earlier talking about the mediocrity of Dark Reign losing me? Well, consider myself lost. Of not in this group are the lack of credits in the Hood, the mediocrity of Elektra, awful Bachalo on Spidey, unreadable Zodiac and “everyone’s favorite” Frank Tieri on Lethal Legion. These titles are way worse than any of the Final Crisis: Aftermath titles by a long shot. It’s completely unnecessary to have any of these, and all they’re going to do is piss off retailers and buyers and hurt everyone involved. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

And that’s it! Like a Diamondbacks player, I’m out!
