Phil-In: Stuff I Read and Put Back by Dan Jacka

I’m baaaaaaaaaaaaack!  That’s right folks; The Professor is on his spring break “I swear I’m grading papers” cruise, so you’re stuck with me all over again.  Prepare yourself for less professional and reasonable criticism and a whole lot more fart jokes and petty insults! Let’s do this!Justice League Rise and Fall Special Writer: J.T. Krul  Artist: Mike Mayhew, Diogenes Neves, Fabrizio Fiorentino.
Gee thanks DC, for ruining one of the characters that got me to read comics.  Apparently it’s not enough for Green Arrow to just kill Prometheus in a way that doesn’t make any sense, now he’s gotta be a murdering vigilante.  DC talked about how big things are happening with Green Arrow this year, but come on.  Logical character advancement is a helluva thing, and it’s not here.

Batman the Widening Gyre #5 (of 6) Writer: Kevin Smith Artist: Walter Flanagan
For those of us who sometimes do enjoy Kevin Smith, we know he’s at his best when he’s unfiltered.  This toned down Smith, relying on double entendres to make all the women look like horny whores, is not working.  This is complete mediocrity with a side taste of sexism.  I wouldn’t let this sit next to me on a plane (Get it? Kevin Smith? Plane? Tough crowd…)

Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #1 (of 3) Writers: James Robinson and Sterling Gates Artist: Pete Woods
Action #887 Writers: Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann Artist: Pere Perez
So if DC editorial was to tell you that they intended to have Superman not appear in any of his flagship titles for over a year, would you drop them?  Or would you wait for his grand return.  Well here is his return, kind of, and it’s just as poor as all the stuff before it has been.  New Krypton has some interesting bits with villains, but overall lacks any enthusiasm.  Action has been a mess with Nightwing and Flamebird, and this is no different.

Prelude to Deadpool Corps #2 (of 5) Writer: Victor Gischler Artist: Whilce Portacio
This is really stupid.  But I don’t mean it as an insult, I swear.  It’s using Kid Deadpool in all his glory, and it seems like Gischler knows how ridiculous it all is.  There are just a couple of lingering problems.  First off is that Portacio is terrible.  He always has been, and he always will be.  Second is the over saturation of Deadpool.  Three ongoing series and a 5-week mini?  Everybody has a limit, and you are pushing mine.

Magog #7 Writer: Keith Giffen Artist: Howard Porter
So if you like overwritten ugly books with a cameo just for the sake of T&A, then this is the book for you.  Every page of this book looks like Giffen wants everyone to know how much he has to say, and Porter wants everyone to close the book and not buy it.  Big time Fail.

WWE Heroes #1 Writer: Keith Champagne Artist: Andy Smith
Worth noting because they used my body as a reference for Triple H’s build (so many muscles, looks just like me).  Otherwise this thing is an incomprehensible mess.  Funny at first, then it just made me kind of sad.  Also confused.  Just bad, very very bad.

Wolverine Mr. X #1 Writer: Frank Tieri Artist: Paco Diaz
Diaz doesn’t suck.  Now that I have the compliments out of the way, this book is really bad.  Wolverine becomes a passive moron, Mr. X gets reworked into the Thunderbolts (in the way that he was already in it 8 months ago), and overall it’s just an example of what not to do in a comic book.  What are the odds, Frank Tieri wrote it.  I try to have my own opinion, but we all know the Professor is write whenever he goes after Tieri.  Yuck.

Breaking into Comics the Marvel Way! #1 (of 2) Writer/artist: various
Worth noting because it is exposure to what Marvel believes is the new art talent.  It also has interviews and commentary about how they made it in the business.  Up and coming artists should check this out.  But on the other hand, what did I learn about breaking into comics the marvel way?  Don’t be a writer.
