Back in 1970’s, I was at a college friend’s house when his roommate walked in and plopped down a brown bag of what I thought was a stack of magazines on the kitchen table. I peeked in the bag and noticed that it wasn’t a stash of magazines at all, but COMIC BOOKS! Not just any comics, mind you, but THE comic, the one that drew me back to the hobby as an adult, DETECTIVE COMICS #471! One of the greatest Bat comics of the Bronze Age era, this book featured the creative work of artist MARSHALL ROGERS and scripter STEVE ENGLEHART. Just an excellent story featuring the Joker, or as I like to remember it, the “laughing fish” storyline. (Ya have to read it to understand!) Rogers delineations were a sight to behold, and to this day, Detective Comics #’s 471-476 are a step ahead in creativity of even most current comic books! Well, the comic book universe discovered this weekend that Marshall Rogers passed away at the age of 57. Too young, for sure. Even though I didn’t know the man, part of the mystic nature of collecting comicsĀ from my youth died when I heard of his death. As comic collectors, we all have that certain book that “endears” us to the hobby. Detec’ #471 was one of those endearing books. Marshall Rogers was one of the best. We should have had him for longer. We’ll be featuring some of his creations in the store for the next few weeks, so please come in and check out the selection.
