Ask the Professor #13 — Cap's Super-Soldier Serum

“Jburruel79” asks: Captain America had his Super- Soldier Serum removed for a time during the Streets of Poison storyline of the early 1990’s. At what point did he get it back? Thanks. Ah, yes: Mark Gruenwald’s (almost) decade-long run on Cap seemed to throw in everything but the kitchen sink — there was Cap resigning, Cap turned into a teenager, Cap-Wolf (Don’t ask. Seriously: don’t ask), and many other variations. Through it all, he was always able to nail Steve Rogers’ essential optimism, patriotism and refusal to ever, ever give up. Older fans rolled their eyes at much of this, … Continue reading

Ask the Professor #10 — Indicia Blues

The Professor’s been off… um, professing for a few weeks, so a few questions have piled up. Here’s the first one: How do you tell the difference between Superman Batman # 1, 1st Batman print vs 2nd Batman print, both look like the same cover. Both are issue # 1. Thanks The key to most otherwise-indistinguishable printings is the indicia — the small print listing the official title of the comic, the issue number and date, the address of the publisher, and other legally-required information. It used to be easy to find, because it was dependably at the bottom of … Continue reading

Ask the Professor #5 — Are Readers Abandoning Marvel?

“Savagedragon99” asks: Question: Am I the only one, or have many fans dropped Captain America (’cause of the “death” of Mr. Rogers) and Spiderman (’cause of the revelation of his identity). I stopped buying most Marvel comics right after civil war. World War Hulk was the icing on the cake-Oh no, the Hulk is on a rampage and nobody can stop him. Really? Thanks for listening. Well, Savdrag, that’s actually three questions, but that’s what The Professor is here for. Let’s see: (1) Based on sales, the “death of Captain America” has been a success — it’s brought fans to … Continue reading

Ask the Professor #3 — Skrulls

Mike B. from Phoenix (whom the Professor has known since he was just a wee lad) asks: Phil, you look exactly the same as you did 10 years ago. To what do you attribute your lack of aging? Are you a clone, perhaps? Or, *gasp* a skrull? OK, so that isn’t a question about a storyline, character, artist, or trivia. How about we stick with the skrull theme and you tell us what ever happened to the skrulls the FF turned into cows, and if you think they will in any way be a part of the upcoming skrull invasion … Continue reading
