Phil-In – Reviews by AABC Staffer Dan- Stuff I Bought #124:

Batman and Robin #1 Writer: Grant Morrison Artist: Frank Quitely Really, are you surprised that this is here?  What’s shocking to me was how accessible this comic would be to first time readers.  Everything makes sense (which is saying something in a Morrison comic), the back story you need is explained, and it’s pretty.  After an awkward page that makes Robin look like a weird old man, everything else was good to go.  Enjoyable and easy to access for anyone wanting to jump onboard the latest bat-styles. The Boys #31 Writer: Garth Ennis Artist: Carlos Ezquerra Worth noting because it’s … Continue reading

Phil-In – Reviews by AABC Staffer Dan – Stuff I Read and Put Back #124:

Surprise! That’s right folks, back again (and for the entire month of June) we have the wonderful “Phil-in” reviews.  Let’s Do this dance! Punisher: Naked Kill. Writer: Jonathan Maberry Artist: Laurence Campbell. You know it can’t be good when I criticize this before I ever get to Ultimatum.  I’m still stuck on “Ennis was the best Punisher writer” syndrome, and this is not helping me get passsed that at all.  The problem is really the story itself.  It’s about a human trafficking porn ring where the ladies are murdered on camera by a man known as “eleventhree” (all one word, … Continue reading

Getting off My Duff #19

I never thought that early 1980’s comic books would ever seem like antiques to me, but after sorting and pricing several hundred books this week from that time period, I’ve changed my mind. Comic books that retailed for 50 cents to 75 cents are now THREE DECADES old! And I was a retailer back then selling them! Sheesh! Where’s my hearing aid and cane? The staff and I have priced a lot of beautiful NM books this week from the 7,000 or so I acquired a couple of weeks ago. As stated in earlier blogs, the majority of the books … Continue reading

Phil's Reviews — Stuff I Bought #123

Glamourpuss #7 — Writer/Artist: Dave Sim I’m not sure why I keep buying this — and it’s impossible to describe — but Sim is one of the great wild talents of comics, and watching him draw high-fashion models crossed with super-hero origin parodies (including, off all things, Steve Ditko’s Mr. A reimagined as “Ms. A”), interspersed with learned discourses on the evolution of realism in comic/newspaper strip cartooning, with namechecks on Caniff, Raymond, Craig Flessel and Lou Fine, just seems like an essential piece of comics scholarship and entertainment. Wolverine #72 — Writer: Mark Millar;  Penciller: Steve McNiven;  Inkers: Dexter … Continue reading

Phil's Reviews — Stuff I Read and Put Back #123

Back to Brooklyn #5 (of 5) — Story: Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti;  Writer: Garth Ennis;  Art: Mihailo Vukelic Pretty minor-league Ennis, with a tone that’s both overwrought and curiously flat;  almost everyone’s irredeemable, and the only rooting interest/viewpoint character does nothing but survive to tell the tale. Would it be stereotyping to blame the Italian, Palmiotti, for the excesses of this readable but forgettable goombah tragedy? Madame Xanadu #11 — Writer: Matt Wagner;  Artist: Michael Wm. Kaluta Kaluta interior art (wrapped around an absolutely gorgeous cover), and it’s the first of five parts, set in 1940s New York City. … Continue reading
